Abstract

Textile industries are responsible for one of the major environmental pollution problems in the world because they release undesirable dye effluents which contain dyes mixed with various contaminants. Therefore, environmental legislation commonly obligates textile industries to treat these effluents before discharge into the environment. In the last few years, the rapid of the textile industry has been accompanied by constant concerns of the environmental problems relating to wastewater. The textile industry is widely known as a sector that consumes a huge amount of water. This leads to the generation of large amounts of textile wastewater with various compositions, depending on the manufacturing processes, type of fibres, and chemicals products. In this paper, a review is provided focusing on the general description of the textile industry, followed by a review of the dyes, classification of the textile dyes. The effluents of the textile industry and their effect on the environmental conditions. The reviews on the various methods for textile wastewater treatment, the advantages and disadvantages of treatment processes have been discussed, and finally, the adsorption processes using carbonaceous materials as an adsorbent for dye removal from textile wastewater effluents has been explained.
